Rich in History

Fierce Indian tribes, rogue pirates, entrepreneurial statesmen and developmental giants are a few of the real-life characters who color Marco Island's rich history.

Archaeological evidence indicates that the war-loving Calusa Indians made Marco Island their home more than 3,500 years ago and flourished in the area for many centuries.

Pirates and explorers, including Jose Gaspar and Ponce de Leon, stopped for water in their Florida explorations during the 16th Century; but the Island remained virtually uninhabited until the turn of the century when entrepreneurial settlers established a clam factory and pineapple plantation here.

Around 1922, Baron G. Collier acquired most of the island, and residential development got under way on a small scale. That all changed in 1964 when Deltona Corporation began the large-scale development of a master-planned waterfront community. Since that time, their dream of creating a friendly community for resort and leisure living has become a reality.
